What's Involved

Clutch replacement means pulling the transmission, which is the bulk of the labor. Once it's out, we inspect everything — clutch disc, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing, flywheel surface, and rear main seal.

  • Clutch disc and pressure plate replacement (OEM, ACT, Exedy, Competition Clutch)
  • Flywheel resurfacing or replacement — dual-mass to single-mass conversions available
  • Throw-out bearing and pilot bearing replacement
  • Rear main seal inspection (and replacement if it's leaking)
  • Clutch hydraulic system bleed

On Subaru WRX and STI models, the clutch job runs 5-7 hours depending on the year. We see about 3 out of every 5 WRXs come in for clutch work between 60,000 and 80,000 miles — earlier if the car is tuned and making more torque than stock. We stock Exedy Stage 1 and ACT kits for EJ and FA platform Subarus.

For other makes — Honda, Ford, BMW — we source the right kit for your power level and driving style. A stock-power daily driver doesn't need a Stage 3 puck clutch, and we'll tell you that.

Signs You Need Clutch Service

  • Engine RPMs rise but the car doesn't accelerate — the clutch is slipping
  • Burning smell (like burnt toast) after hard pulls or hill driving
  • Clutch pedal engagement point has moved higher or feels different
  • Grinding or chattering when you release the clutch
  • Difficulty getting the car into gear, especially first and reverse

Why It Matters

A slipping clutch generates heat. That heat warps the flywheel, glazes the pressure plate, and can damage the transmission input shaft bearing. What starts as a $1,200 clutch job can turn into $2,500+ if the flywheel needs replacement and the throw-out bearing has scored the transmission nose.

On Subaru EJ motors, a neglected rear main seal leak will contaminate the new clutch within a few thousand miles — so we always check it while the trans is out. If it's seeping, we replace it during the same job and save you the labor of pulling it apart again.
