Audis are great cars to drive and complicated cars to fix — that's the honest truth. The engineering is dense, the engine bays are packed, and the labor times are higher than a Honda or Toyota. But if you find a shop that knows the platform, ownership doesn't have to be painful. Dave has Audi and VW background, and we've been working on the VAG (Volkswagen Auto Group) platform for years.

The 2.0T TFSI engine is the most common Audi engine we see. It's in the A3, A4, A5, Q3, Q5, and several other models across multiple generations. The EA888 (Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3) has different issues depending on which revision you have. Gen 1 and Gen 2 cars (roughly 2008-2014) are known for timing chain tensioner failures — the tensioner can lose tension on a cold start, allowing the chain to skip teeth. If you hear a brief rattle on cold starts, that's urgent. A skipped chain on these engines bends valves and can destroy the head.

Gen 3 EA888 engines (2015+) fixed the tensioner issue but introduced a new one: water pump failures. The electric water pump on these cars fails around 60-80K miles. It's an $800-1,200 repair depending on the model, and it's better to do it before it leaves you stranded than after.

Common Audi Services We Handle

  • Timing chain tensioner replacement on 2.0T EA888 Gen 1 and Gen 2 engines
  • Water pump replacement on EA888 Gen 3 (A3, A4, Q5 — 2015+)
  • DSG (S-tronic) transmission fluid and filter service every 40K miles
  • Quattro system service — Haldex fluid change on transverse-engine models
  • Carbon cleaning (walnut blasting) on direct-injected TFSI engines
  • Brake pad and rotor replacement — Audi uses good brakes but they wear faster than you'd think
  • Thermostat and coolant flange replacement (plastic coolant parts are an Audi tradition)
  • PCV valve and oil separator replacement on 2.0T (causes rough idle and oil consumption)
  • Control arm replacement on B8/B9 A4 and A5 (front suspension uses multi-link with 4 arms per side)

Audi Performance Tuning

The 2.0T TFSI and 3.0T supercharged V6 are strong tuning platforms, and we support both. For ECU tuning, we work with APR and Integrated Engineering (IE) — two of the most established names in the VAG tuning space. An APR Stage 1 tune on a 2.0T A4 picks up about 60-80 horsepower with no hardware changes. Stage 2 adds a downpipe and picks up more, but it also means emissions equipment removal, so know what you're getting into.

The 3.0T supercharged V6 in the S4, S5, and SQ5 is a monster tuning platform. A simple pulley upgrade and tune pushes these cars past 400 horsepower. Add a heat exchanger, intake, and supporting mods and 450+ is realistic on a daily-driven car.

We also tune the EA888 Gen 3 platform via the COBB Accessport where supported, and Dave can custom-tune via EcuTek on select Audi models. All performance work is verified on our Mustang AWD dyno — Quattro cars need an AWD dyno, and that's what we have.

Why Bring Your Audi to Cryotune

Audi dealer labor rates in the Denver metro run $180-220 per hour. Ours are lower, and the work is the same quality. For a car that needs 8 hours of labor for a timing chain tensioner job, that difference pays for the repair itself.

Dave's background with the VAG platform means we're not learning on your car. We have VCDS (VAG-COM) diagnostic software for Audi-specific fault codes, module coding, and adaptation resets. We also have the factory-spec tools for jobs like DSG fluid changes and Haldex services that require specific fill procedures. This isn't work you want done at a quick-lube shop.

Audi owners, we've got you.

Whether it's routine maintenance or a full build, your Audi gets the same honest diagnosis and clean work. Book a visit today.
