Why It Matters
Exhaust leaks before the O2 sensors throw off your air/fuel ratio readings, which makes the engine run poorly and wastes fuel. Leaks after the catalytic converter put exhaust gases — including carbon monoxide — where they shouldn't be, especially if they're near the cabin.
A failing catalytic converter will eventually clog and restrict exhaust flow. When that happens, the engine loses power and runs hot. On some cars, a clogged cat can cause enough backpressure to damage exhaust valves. Replacement is expensive ($800-$2,500+ depending on the car), but catching a bad O2 sensor or misfire before it kills the cat saves you that bill.
