The Skyactiv engine family is the backbone of modern Mazda. The 2.0L and 2.5L Skyactiv-G engines are naturally aspirated, high-compression, and efficient. They're reliable engines that mostly just need their oil changed on time. The 2.5T turbocharged version (found in the CX-9, Mazda6, and CX-5 Turbo) adds a turbo to the mix and makes around 250 horsepower on 93 octane. It's a good engine, though we've seen some carbon buildup issues on the direct-injected intake valves past 60K miles — similar to what we see on other GDI turbo engines.

The MX-5 Miata doesn't need much — it's a simple car with a small engine, a manual transmission, and not much to go wrong. Oil changes, brake pads, and the occasional clutch replacement is about all we see on these. They're built right.

Mazda has a smaller dealer network than Toyota or Honda, which means fewer service options and sometimes longer wait times. We're a good alternative — we know the Skyactiv platform, stock the right fluids and filters, and can turn around most Mazda service jobs in a day.
